Alertness Towards Cyber Security
Information security is one of the careers in demand. With the growing climate of world affairs today, it seems as if information security will remain in demand for quite some time well into the future. Many employers spread across the globe are requesting their staff members are certified in their chosen career disciplines, to insure they are employing the best and brightest professionals. The demand is so great, even the federal government is wondering if they have individuals capable of handling the increasing threat of cyber criminals and attacks against our nation.
Recently, the government House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee questioned if there were enough talented professionals in number, ability, authority, and resources, to protect against cyberattacks from various directions. Homeland Security has their own cybersecurity department, put in place to defend against the threat. Stewart Baker, part of the Steptoe & Johnson law firm as a partner, and former Homeland Security assistant secretary for policy, stated, "Without a doubt we are not prepared to face a major cyberattack today. If we find ourselves in a serious conflict with five or ten sophisticated countries, we will not know how to defend and respond."
It is believed between the years 2006 to 2009, various United States departments and agencies received a four hundred increase of cyber attacks. Committee chairman and Mississippi Democrat Bernie Thompson, noted, "The military and intelligence gathering concerns of foreign nations, domestic or international groups of terrorists, individuals full of hate, common cyber criminals, or hackers seeking a thrill, they attempt to enter and exploit out computer networks and are large and very determined.”
Many organizations and enterprises are facing the same concerns about cyberattacks and cybersecurity as the federal government, which tends to lean towards apathy. Californian Republican Representative Dan Lungren feels the same way. "We have the finances and the authority and the personnel. Can't we perform a better job?"
The feeling remains that the technology exists for government computers and networks to possess much better security, it has yet to be installed.
Bernie Thompson believes US-CERT, or the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (their mission is to protect federal civilian agencies from cyberattack) is not as staffed as it could be, and has had a revolving door of directors, as many as four in five years. As the number of contractors are greater than the number of federal employees at US-CERT by three to one, Thompson says, “US-CERT does not possess the sufficient staff to compile and analyze security data. Therfore, it should not be a surprise day-to-day operations may suffer."
California Democrat Representative Zoe Lofgren wonders how the Department of Homeland Security and many other United States department authority entities will bolster their ranks with expert technical assistance in the area of cybersecurity. Lofgren believes the computer science graduates at the nation’s best universities do not view the United States government as a great location to spearhead their careers. "I do not believe we are going to acquire young people to apply for a federal job. They are needed. We are going to have to pay them very well. More than the regular pay scale."
